Cardiac Catheterization Lab
The Heart & Vascular Program at SASCOE provides unsurpassed cardiovascular care. Cardiac catheterization is a procedure in which a small tube is inserted in an artery to diagnose and treat heart problems. SASCOE offers radial (through the arm) and femoral (through the groin) catheterization. Radial catheterization is a newer approach allowing patients to recover faster, reducing the risk of complications.
Our cardiac cath team performs diagnostic or interventional procedures involving blood vessels in the heart (cardio), neck (carotid) and other body areas (peripheral).
Common Procedures:
- Heart Catheterization (right and left side)
procedure using a small tube inserted in an artery to diagnose/treat heart problems. - Coronary Angioplasty & Stenting
opens a narrowed artery and keeps it open - Coronary Artery Atherectomy
removes artery blockage - Thrombectomy
surgical blood clot removal - IVC Filter Placement
filters out clots that occur - Swan Ganz Insertion
measures blood flow to the lungs - Pre-Surgical Cardiac Clearance
ensures patient’s cardiac fitness is clear for surgery
Electrophysiology (EP) monitors and records the heart’s electrical activity to assist in diagnosing the cause of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). These results help inform treatment plans developed by our board-certified surgeons.
Common Procedures:
- Pacemakers
implanted devices that control the heart’s pace - Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillators (ICDs)
implanted devices that transmit minute electric shocks to reset dangerous heart rhythms - EP Studies
used to diagnose or monitor heart rhythm problems - Stress-Echocardiogram
ultrasound performed at rest and during exercise to assess the heart’s function - Trans-Esophageal Echo
ultrasound performed with a tube safely placed down the throat - Cardiac Ablation (or Radiofrequency Ablation)
uses minute electrical charges to destroy specific area(s) in the heart which cause irregular rhythms

Cardiovascular
Revascularization is one of the most common operations performed at SASCOE. Diabetes and cardiovascular conditions can lead to decreased blood flow in the extremities. This, in turn, leads to chronic wounds because blood flow is required for healing. While most hospitals choose to amputate an endangered limb, at SASCOE, we do all we can to save the limb through revascularization techniques. We have a 99% success rate in saving limbs that have been referred to other facilities for amputation.
We believe that – although amputations pay the facility more – they are archaic; we thus choose to revascularize instead to save our patients’ limbs and therefore not only prolong, but also enhance quality of life. This results in a much-reduced risk for both COPD and cancer (as compared with amputation).
Common Procedures:
- Revascularization
Focusing on the contents of the torso (excluding reproductive organs), general surgery is an umbrella category for operations involving the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, appendix, thyroid and soft tissues. At SASCOE, general surgery often employs minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopy and laparoscopy.
Standard Procedures:
- Hernia repair
- appendectomy
- gallbladder removal
- breast excision and reconstruction
General Surgery
Orthopedics
Concerned with musculoskeletal conditions, orthopedic surgery uses surgical and non-surgical approaches to address trauma, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections and more. At SASCOE, our orthopedic surgeons employ minimally invasive techniques such as arthroscopy, resulting in smaller scars and faster recovery times.
Standard Procedures:
- Joint replacement
- fracture
- tendon tear
Spinal surgery focuses on diseases, disorders and injuries to the spine and vertebrae. Utmost care must be taken with this sensitive system, so SASCOE partners with only the best spinal surgeons – with proven outcomes.
Standard Procedures:
- Spinal Fusion
- laminectomy
- decompression

Ancillary Services
Anesthesiology
Anesthesiology is the medical specialty and science of caring for patients before, during and after surgery. Our anesthesiologists focus on preventing, mitigating, or eliminating any pain involved with surgical procedures. This can include a local anesthetic (numbing the area where the surgery will take place) and general anesthesia, where you will essentially be asleep or unconscious for the procedure. SASCOE’s extensively trained anesthesiologists administer anesthesia and monitor each patient’s condition throughout surgery, ensuring safe and pain-free surgical operations.
Pain Management
Pain can be challenging to contend with – causing severely reduced mobility, significant impact on quality of life and numerous other lifestyle changes. At SASCOE, we partner with trusted pain management physicians to reduce and manage pain safely and responsibly.
